Agence Française de Développement

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group funds, supports and accelerates the transition to a fairer and more sustainable world. Focusing on climate, biodiversity, peace, education, urban development, health and governance, its teams carry out more than 4,000 projects in France’s overseas departments and territories and another 115 countries. In this way, it contributes to the commitment of France and French people to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In 2019, AFD passed a new milestone and for the first time committed over EUR 14,1bn for development projects. It has a wide range of innovative and appropriate financial tools to support our partners. The diversity of its tools is a major asset for development. Year after year, it strengthens and extend our range of products and services depending on changes in our partners’ needs and their priorities. Financing tools are as follows:

  • Loans: AFD’s main financing tool
  • Grants: For the development of the poorest countries
  • C2D (Debt Reduction-Development Contract): A mechanism to relieve indebted countries
  • Financing NGO projects
  • FEXTE: A cooperation instrument
  • Guarantees: An instrument to mobilize local instruments
  • FICOL: A springboard for the external action of French territories
  • Adapt’Action: supporting countries seeking technical assistance for the institutional, methodological and operational implementation of their commitments to the fight against climate change
  • The 2050 Facility: Providing support for some 30 of the highest emitting and most vulnerable developing countries in their transition to a low-carbon and resilient development model
